Born June 17, 1993 in Toronto, Ontario
Drafted 9th Overall in the 1st Round by the Boston Bruins in 2011
Traded to the Flames for a 1st round pick and two 2nd round picks in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.

(Stats from the Flames website)

In his last 5 games, Dougie Hamilton has 1 goal and 2 assists for a total of 3 points but is averaging about 2.6 shots on goal per game which turn into scoring chances in front of the net.

According to the Flames website, Hamilton has appeared in all 81 games this season and has 12 goals and 31 assists for 43 points which is good enough to put him in 7th place in team scoring and is the most points he has scored since playing for the Niagara Ice Docs of the OHL back in 2012.

Dougie got to play with his brother Freddie in four games at the end of March as Freddie was called up on an emergency basis. The two seemed to have the same brotherly chemistry that Daniel and Henrik Sedin have as they hooked up on a couple of nice plays but failed to convert them into goals. Dougie commented in a Calgary Sun article by Eric Francis:

During the off-season, Hamilton came to the Flames in a trade with the Boston Bruins for a 1st round pick and two 2nd round picks in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. In the season before the trade, Dougie had a banner year scoring 10 goals and 32 assists for 42 points which may have a key factor in the Flames acquiring him.

I think acquiring Hamilton was a great move for the Flames who already had a solid defense anchor with Mark Giordano and T.J. Brodie but seem to still be struggling in the goaltending department. Had Dougie not struggled to start the season he would have had outstanding numbers and may have even been close to the top of the team in scoring. We will see what happens next season when the Flames look to acquire a strong goalie or two, a topic that we wrote about in an earlier Matchsticks article.
