2020 Ranking: #13 (-1)
After two years of development with the Stockton Heat, Glenn Gawdin finally got into his first NHL action this year, dressing in seven games for the Calgary Flames. He made his NHL debut on February 20 against the Edmonton Oilers and dressed in five straight games over the course of a week before being returned to Stockton. Gawdin returned to the club late in the season for a pair of games including picking up his first career point in a victory over Ottawa.
Gawdin also had 13 points in 22 games with the Stockton Heat during the team’s limited action this season. It was a relatively down year from the 47 points in 53 games he had in 2019-20, but that was to be expected as he didn’t really fit well into the Heat lineup with the emergence of Adam Ruzicka taking over top line duties on the team. He had ten points in the final 16 games he played for Stockotn, so it appeared that he had finally found his groove down the stretch.
Heading into this season, it looked like Gawdin would have a good opportunity to crack the Flames lineup at the 4C position or at least grab one of the 14 forward spots. However with the recent signing of Brad Richardson, along with other depth adds like Trevor Lewis, Tyler Pitlick, and Brett Ritchie, he will be fighting just to stay in Calgary. He will also have to compete with fellow prospects Adam Ruzicka and Matthew Phillips among others for those final few jobs.
Gawdin will be a restricted free agent again after this season, but you would have to think that he may be keen to explore opportunities elsewhere should he be unable to crack the Flames lineup on a more regular basis this year.
