#17 – Jeremie Poirier

Position: Defense

Age: 19

Team: Saint John Sea Dogs (QMJHL)

Stats: 9 Goals, 28 Assists in 33 Games

Drafted in 2020, Round 3, Pick 72

2020 Ranking: #19 (+2)

Jeremie Poirier is arguably the Calgary Flames most intriguing prospect right now. He brings a strong mix of offensive talent and playmaking from the blue line but still has some deficiencies in his defensive game.

Poirier was a consensus late first round to early second round pick at the 2020 draft, so for the Flames to snag him in the third round with one of the extra picks they acquired by trading down was really impressive work.

Poirier will continue to play with the Sea Dogs for this upcoming season and will get top roles on both the defense core and powerplay unit. After being just one of a handful of QMJHL defencemen to surpass a point per game last year, he should be in the running for scoring title by defensemen this year with a good Sea Dogs team.

The key to Poirier finding long term career success is continued work on his defensive game and improving his skating, as his offensive skillset is already bordering on elite. This season should all be about watching Poirier adjust and hopefully excel in a major role with his club, and then hopefully the Flames can continue working on the finer things down the road to help turn him into an NHLer.

While it is entirely possible that things just don’t click in his development, if they do, the Flames will certainly have a heck of a player on their hands.
