Welcome to the annual Matchsticks & Gasoline Top 25 Under 25! We kicked it off with a best of the rest from 26 down, so now comes the real countdown of the top 25 players currently within the Flames organization, under 25 years of age at the time of these articles.

To start it off, we have a new addition to this list in William Stromgren. The massive Swede (6 foot 3) was taken in this past draft, 45th overall, and was one of the youngest players taken, having only turned 18 just over a month before the draft.

Born in Örnsköldsvik. Stromgren has risen through the ranks of his hometown MODO Hockey putting up gaudy numbers for the U16 and U18 teams in 2018-19, and U18 and U20 teams in 2019-20. He was able to crack the main roster this past season as a 17 year old for the MODO HockeyAllSvenSkan professional squad, which is Sweden’s second tier league. This was a well deserved promotion, as he potted 10 goals and 18 points in 14 U20 Nationell games. His numbers were solid in his first taste of pro hockey with 9 points in 27 games, and a stint with Örnsköldsvik in Sweden’s third tier league saw those numbers jump to 12 points in 11 games.

An off-season trade to Rögle BK means he will get a taste of SHL hockey in Sweden’s top league in 2021-22, as well as their junior U20 team. His biggest assets are his size and shot, but as of now his footwork and speed will make him a longer term project. Regardless, his numbers and skill clearly show that he quickly adapts to higher levels of skill over time, and has consistently played out of his age range consistently. With his first taste of professional hockey (and likely a Flames training camp) under his belt, Stromgren is poised for massive developmental strides in a highly competitive, respected league this coming season.
