Yes, we’re looking at another centre with the #12 pick in the draft, but there’s a good chance the Flames will need to add another considering there may be some potential off season moves coming up. Mason McTavish is a big bodied 18 year old with limited experience, but could be a good project piece to have in the stable.

McTavish is currently playing in Sweden with Olten EHC. In very limited time while being on loan to Olten EHC, the left shot centre played very well. He suited up for 13 games and collected nine goals and two assists. His most recent efforts came for Team Canada with the U18’s in the WJC where he was part of a squad that took home the gold medal. In seven games Mason McTavish would score five goals and collect 6 assists and those 11 points made him the 5th highest goal scorer in the tournament.

His best season to date in any league came in 2019-20 when he was a member of the Peterborough Petes of the OHL. McTavish would play in 57 games, score 29 goals and collect 13 assists in his first full season with the Petes. His 29 goals were good for third on the team and his 42 total points were 7th best.

Most mock drafts have McTavish falling somewhere between 8-15 so, like everything else in the draft, it’s a crap shoot. Lots of teams would most likely take chance on a bigger centre with a really heavy shot, so he may not be there when the Flames are picking. With that said, Mason McTavish is an interesting prospect that might be worth looking at if he’s around at #12.
