Individual Grades

MGMacGillivray: B - I’m personally a really big fan of Derek Ryan so my grade might be a touch high, but I first want to say that I was stunned that not one team traded for him at the trade deadline this year. While the Flames weren’t going to just give him up, I’m surprised they couldn’t even grab a mid round pick while retaining money or something along those lines. His advanced stats were among the very best on the team, with only Chris Tanev putting up similar numbers. He played time on both sides of special teams and is a player that can go up and down the lineup. I mean there’s nothing more you want in a bottom six forward. While he is a candidate to go to Seattle as it’s his home state, I would be very happy if the Flames brought him back on a cheaper deal before he hits free agency.

MarkParkinson14: C I'm fine with all Derek Ryan does. He gives the Flames bottom six a steadying presence and is one of their true leaders on and off the ice. I don't ever judge him completely based on numbers because he offers more than goals and assists. There's a good chance this was the last you'll see of Ryan in a Flames uniform and while it's kind of a bummer, it's not like Ryan is a player that can't be replaced.

Gordie.Taylor: C It seems unfair to judge any of the Flames during the Geoff Ward era who could only maintain a constant inconsistence, but Ryan’s play post being put on waivers was night and day. Let’s not get it confused, Ryan was only put on waivers because of his injury problems early on and he was only not claimed because of his cap hit. He was without a doubt the most dependable bottom 6 player and you know exactly what you’re going to get from him night in and night out. I doubt Seattle wastes a pick on a pending UFA, but there’s little doubt in my mind Ryan will be signing with them this summer as much as I would like him back.
