Flames Change Up Their Assistant Coaches

The Calgary Flames have made some adjustments to their coaching staff heading into next season.

First, they have hired Kirk Muller as an assistant coach. Muller was fired by the Montreal Canadiens earlier this season along with Claude Julien after spending four and a half seasons with the team. He also has previous experience as a head coach with Carolina from 2011-12 to 2013-14.

Next, they have promoted Cail MacLean to an assistant coach role. He was the head coach of Stockton for the past three seasons and follows in the same promotional footsteps as Ryan Huska as Huska coached the Heat prior to MacLean. For MacLean it is a story of climbing the ladder with the franchise as he originally started as an assistant in Abbotsford, before becoming a head coach in the ECHL. He was an assistant in Stockton before taking over for the aforementioned Huska.

Speaking of Huska, he will remain on the coaching staff for next season along with goaltending coach Jason Labarbera and video coach Jamie Pringle.

On their way out are Ray Edwards who will return to his role in player development with the club, and Martin Gelinas who will also move to a role in player development. Gelinas was hired under Bob Hartley as an assistant coach in 2012 and survived multiple coaching changes, but does have previous experience in player development from time in Nashville.
