Calgary Flames 6 - Ottawa Senators 1
Well, the Flames are doing their best to keep things interesting as this season winds down. Part of it is Calgary winning a game today that they desperately needed to win and the fact that Montreal just keeps giving away points. Calgary’s 6-1 victory Sunday night over the Ottawa Senators put the Flames eight points back of the Canadiens with four games left to play. Montreal only has two games left and for this miracle to happen the Habs would have lose their final two and the Flames win their final four. But to even get there the Flames needed to take care of those pesky Sens and they did just that.
The Flames offence exploded for six goals, a feat they last accomplished on February 27th against these very Ottawa Senators. Goals have been tough to come by for Calgary lately as they’ve only scored four or more goals twice in their last eight games coming into last night’s contest. Lighting the lamp was certainly not a problem Sunday night.
Johnny Gaudreau got the Flames going in the first period with a breakaway goal to put Calgary up 1-0 and then the flood gates opened. Mikael Backlund, Matthew Tkachuk, Michael Stone, Dillon Dube and Mark Giordano would all score goals for the Flames and Jacob Markstrom would hold up his end of the bargain as well. The Flames goaltender would stop 19 of the 20 shots that came his way to earn his 18th victory of the season.
