NHL Standings

The Flames don’t have much of anything to play for as there are only six games left this season, but any time you can pad some stats and beat up on a struggling team you should absolutely do it. Enter the Winnipeg Jets. The Jets are in an absolute free fall at the worst possible time, but their early season success built them enough cushion so they can still make it into the playoffs when the regular season ends.

The Jets are currently mired in a seven game losing skid that has seen their lead over the Canadiens disappear as both team are now tied with 57 points. Winnipeg has only been able to muster up 10 goals in those seven games with the Jets being shut out once and having three one goal affairs in the that stretch. To compound the issues in Winnipeg every team they’ve lost to has been a team in the North Division that will be heading to the playoffs, with a 2-1 loss to Ottawa being the exception.

Calgary, meanwhile, is just patiently waiting to be officially eliminated from the playoffs. Both Montreal and Winnipeg sit 10 points ahead of the Flames and short of winning out and everyone else losing out, this season is toast. Despite playing .500 hockey over their last 10 games, the Flames mid season slumps and failure to play anything that resembled hockey against bottom dwelling teams doomed this team’s playoff chances.

The Flames can salvage a 4-5-0 record against the Jets this season with a win tonight, making it only the second time in seven seasons they will have lost the yearly series with the Jets. At this point it’s all about personal stats and seeing what Calgary has for the 2021-22 season because the nails just keep being hammered into the Calgary 2021 coffin.
