Day Three and Game Three of the 2021 PWHPA Secret Dream Gap Tour kicked off this afternoon from the Seven Chiefs Sportsplex at Grey Eagle Casino on Tsuut’ina Nation Land in Treaty 7 Territory.

Today’s matchup was Toronto’s Team Sonnet squaring off against hosts Team Scotiabank from Calgary. Both squads were looking for their first win of the tournament, after Team Bauer from Montreal has jumped out to a six point lead in the Round Robin standings, having defeated TOR and CGY each once. The host team was looking to find their legs, after getting rocked 6-1 by Montreal yesterday.

Team Scotiabank would make a change between the pipes, as Kassidy Sauve came in to replace Marlene Boissonault after she allowed six goals in Calgary’s tournament opener. Amanda Makela would get the nod for Team Sonnet in the opposition net. The goalie change did not offer much positivity, as Toronto would pounce early and often.

Early it was, as Jaime Lee Rattray would open the scoring quickly at the 18:40 mark for Team Sonnet! (assists to Brianne Jenner and Claire Thompson)

First it was the early, then came the often. Just over a minute later at 17:47, Madison Field would capitalize off a broken play which allowed TOR to take possession and make it 2-0. (Assists to Ella Shelton and Kristen Richards) Jamie Lee Rattray would notch her second of the outing shortly after that, at 16:07 (Assists to Kayla Vespa, Brianne Jenner).

Team Scotiabank’s Meaghan Mikkelsson would then head off at 14:37 for interference, as for the second game in a row she would take the first penalty of the game. Team Sonnet would capitalize, as Loren Gabel would then make it 4-0 Team Sonnet (Assist to Natalie Spooner).

The goals would keep coming for TOR, as Brittany Howard would extend the lead to 5-0 with 2:30 left in the frame. (Assists to Victoria Bach, Sarah Nurse)

Calgary would finally find their way onto the scoresheet just over a minute later, as for the second game in a row Sara Potomak opened the scoring for Team Scotiabank (Assists to Erica Kromm, Rebecca Johnston) with 1:38 left in the first 20 that would close out the opening stanza.

Potomak’s goal would translate into a pair of unanswered goals for the host team in the second. After Toronto would take back to back penalties, at 17:32 Blayre Turnbull would add a powerplay goal off a fantastic power finish! (Assist Kaitlyn Gosling)

However, the guns were blazing yet again for Team Sonnet. Brittany Howard would fire back just over a minute later at 16:36 with her second of the contest (Assist to Victoria Bach) to extend the lead 6-2. The frustration would start to show, as Mikkelson would sit for her second penalty of the game right after Brigette Lacquette found her way to the box, creating a brief 5-on-3 disadvantage for Team Scotiabank. Calgary would survive the penalty trouble, but Toronto would keep right on coming as Brittany Howard would grab her hat trick just after the midway point (Assist to Victoria Bach).

Meaghan Mikkelson would get that one back in the later moments of period two, (Assists to Samantha Cogen, Alexis Woloschuk) and make it 7-3. Team Sonnet would carry that four goal lead into the third and final frame.

Things would cool off in the last 20, but weren’t completely void of scoring. Toronto would pad their lead at 13:39 with an unsassisted Victoria Bach goal to make it 8-3. Bach would register that goal plus three assists on the day.

With the victory, plus hitting the extra point achievements of 5+ goals and a hat trick, Team Sonnet has roared back into the Round Robin standings in a big way. This suddenly puts them within striking distance of first place, while Team Scotiabank will be in tough to make Sunday’s Championship game at the Saddledome.

The Dream Gap Tour Scoring and Standings system is as follows:

-Regulation Win = 2.0 points, OT Win = 1.5 points, Shootout Win = 1.0 points, OT/Shootout Loss = 0.5 points, and a Regulation Loss = 0 points.

Teams can also earn points in the standings for registering a shutout, a hat trick, a shorthanded goal, and scoring a collective five goals or more in a game. Achieving each of these equates to one extra point in the round robin pool standings.

Calgary has an off day tomorrow after opening the tournament with back-to-back games. Much like the NHL playoffs, Montreal and Toronto will take center stage tomorrow for a Team Bauer vs. Team Sonnet rematch of the Round Robin opener. Tomorrow’s contest goes at 5 p.m. ET / 3 p.m. MT / 2 p.m. PT, and is available to stream for free at Sportsnet.ca, YouTube, and on your SN NOW subscription.
