The Morning After
Calgary Flames 1 - Edmonton Oilers 4
Tidbits
1 Goal Misery: The magic Calgary brought in 2014-15 in their ability to comeback and tie crucial games has all but disappeared. The Flames have been abysmal in one goal games all year, but now in the most crucial part of the season they have fallen 2-1 to Montreal twice and just couldn’t find the equalizer in this one. They’re 6-9-2 in one goal games in 2020-21.
More starts, less problems: Jacob Markstrom has now started 11 games in a row since David Rittich was dealt at the deadline, and yet the veteran netminder has reverted to his strong play from the beginning of the season. He’s only given up more than 2 goals twice in that 11 game span, including tonight with two empty net goals.
400 games down: Connor McDavid celebrated his 400th NHL game by performing his favourite trick: scoring on the Flames. He had ominously put up zeroes in the previous two matchups, and this explosion seemed inevitable for the league’s best player.
No help: Montreal had already done too much by getting to overtime against the Ottawa Senators, but Cole Caufield burying the winner didn’t help either. This playoff chase is more or less over.
