Calgary Flames 3 - Toronto Maple Leafs 2 (OT)

NHL Standings

In what had to be one of the weirdest scenes with the Flames this season, Johnny Gaudreau took a bouncing puck, controlled it and beat.....David Rittich in overtime to give Calgary a 3-2 victory over the Maple Leafs. This wasn’t one of the most exciting contests of the season, but the Flames were able to push a little in the third and take control of the tempo to get this game to OT.

Toronto was starting their newest toy in David Rittich and he looked like good ole Big Save Dave for most of the evening. He stopped 25 of the 28 shots he saw and didn’t look uncomfortable at all, DESPITE the fact that even after being traded (according to reports) he traveled with the Flames to Toronto to take on his now old team. That’s just par for the course in 2021.

As for the Flames, their big takeaway from tonight is Darryl Sutter is just another coach in a long line of coaches who just doesn’t let his lines gel or grow. The new look Lindholm/Gaudreau/Tkachuk line was broken up over various parts of the evening, even though they all were part of the Flames second goal of the evening. Such is life.

Thankfully (or not depending on your view of this season), Calgary was able to pull this one out and secure two points on the road AND snap a four game road losing streak.
