The Flames are finally back on the ice, after what seemed like an eternity, to take on the Edmonton Oilers. This will be the 8th time these two have met during the regular season with this game originally being played on May 7th, but was moved up due to the Canucks having a MAJOR Covid outbreak last week. In this extended 2021 version of the Battle Of Alberta the Oilers have won five of the seven games the teams have played and have gone 5-1-0 after losing the first BOA 6-4 to the Flames back on February 6th.

Calgary comes into this game a hot mess. They’ve lost four in a row and nine of their last eleven and are all but assured to be sitting at home when the rest of the North Division is playing playoff hockey. Add to the fact that the last place Ottawa Senators are only five points behind your beloved Calgary Flames and you can chalk this season up as a major disappointment.

Edmonton meanwhile is making a push for the top spot in the North Division. The Oilers have passed Winnipeg and landed in the second place spot, just five points behind the Toronto Maple Leafs and their last 10 games have been key to that success. Over that stretch the Oilers haven’t lost in regulation (7-0-3) and have secured at least a point in all 10 games. Couple that with the fact that Mike Smith is 3-0-2 in his last five starts AND is 4-1-0 with a 2.42 GAA against the Flames in 2021 and it certainly looks like it could be another long night for your Calgary Flames. The only thing that could be viewed as a “good thing” is the fact that the Flames won’t have to deal with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins as he’s out with an upper body injury for tonight’s contest. He only has 28 points on the season, but seven have come against the Flames.
