NHL Standings

The Flames can do something tonight that no team has been able to do this season: send Toronto to a fourth straight loss. The Maple Leafs are stumbling and Calgary needs to take full advantage of that tonight in Toronto.

One would think David Rittich will get the start tonight as this is a true back to back and he’s had Toronto’s number this season. As we mentioned yesterday, Rittich is 1-0-1 against the Leafs this season and his GAA and Save% (0.99/.972) are outstanding when taking on Auston Matthews and Co. He’s also the only goalie to pitch a shutout against Toronto this season as well (also the only Flames goalie to do that IN Toronto).

The Flames got contributions from throughout the lineup last night with Matthew Tkachuk, Mark Giordano, Derek Ryan and Chris Tanev all scoring in a 4-3 win. If Calgary can get their top two lines clicking and keep their bottom six productive they have a good shot to take another two points from the Leafs.

What won’t be easy is keeping Toronto’s big three off the score sheet. Last night the Flames held Auston Matthews without a point for the second time this season, a feat that has only been accomplished one other time and that was by the Vancouver Canucks. Mitch Marner was able to score, but John Tavares was left with a donut at the end of the night and that’s how you take down the Maple Leafs. Limiting their top point producers and hoping you can do just enough on your end is probably the best game plan when it comes to shutting down this high powered offence. It worked last night for the Flames and they’ll surely need a repeat of that to win tonight.
