The Battle of Alberta would begin in regular fashion, Flames’ Sam Bennett and Oilers’ Jujhar Khaira dropping the gloves and teeing off early in the first period.

However, Edmonton Oilers’ Connor McDavid would be the story for tonight’s battle. Halfway into the game McDavid had registered 5 points, with a hat trick and assists on the first two Oilers goals. 506 points, 371 NHL career games for Connor.

His second goal came on a break-away a minute into the second period, increasing the Oilers lead to 4-1. McDavid stripping Noah Hanifin of the puck, and with a no look shot that had Flames’ goaltender Markstrom easily beat.

David Rittich would come in for relief after the 5th goal against Markstrom. By the end of the second the Oilers would be leading the Flames with a score of 6-1, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scoring his second goal of the game on an Oilers PP.

All chaos breaks lose 36 seconds into the third period, as the Oilers tear right through the Flames defense, and Josh Archibald makes it 7-1 Edmonton.

Oilers’ netminder Mikko Koskinen would make 43 saves on 44 shots for the win.

The lone goal for the Calgary Flames would come on a power play in the first period by Andrew Mangiapane. Mangiapane would find the puck in front of the net and shovel it up and in.

There would be a review for goaltender interference, but league officials would agree that Oilers player Nurse had shoved Matthew Tkachuk into Koskinen – good goal.

Jacob Markstrom was 10-15 save-shots, and David Rittich was 7-9 save-shots in tonight’s loss to the Oilers.

The Flames will look to regroup after losing two in a row to the Oilers. The next battle of Alberta is two weeks from now on Saturday, March 6th in Edmonton.
