Calgary Flames vs Dallas Stars, 8:30 PM MT, Rogers Place, Edmonton AB
TV: NBCSN, CBC, SN - Radio: Sportsnet 960
Calgary Flames (1-0) - Dallas Stars (0-1)
The Flames did what they had to do Tuesday afternoon and the result was a 3-2 victory over Dallas that put them up 1-0 in Round 1 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Flames got more bottom six scoring, solid defence and Cam Talbot made the stops when needed to earn his 4th win of the post season.
Something the Flames have been doing well since returning to the ice is blocking shots and that trend continued in Game 1. The Flames blocked 18 Dallas shots, giving them 76 so far in five games, which ranks fourth overall. Calgary has also been one of the more physical teams this post season, settling in at 4th in the playoff pool with 154 hits (30.08 a game). That trend continued as well, as the Flames out hit the Stars 34-29. So, consensus says if the Flames keep playing this way, they should continue to have success.
Dallas could use an infusion of offence, as they are having a hard time finding the back of the net. Since they returned to the ice against Vegas, they have only scored 6 goals in four games. Tyler Seguin has been a big part of that slump, unfortunately for Dallas. The offensive dynamo had 0 points in three games before getting hurt and when he did suit up in Game 1 against Calgary he had no points, no shots and was a -1. Miro Heiskanen has carried the offensive load admirably (5 points), but they need more out of guys like Jamie Benn, Corey Perry and Joe Pavelski (4 points total) if they’re going to advance past the Flames and head to Round 2.
Basically, if both teams keep doing what they are doing, the Flames should be in good shape.
