2019-20 Player Report Card: T.J. Brodie

It was quite a year for the Flames defenceman, that all things considered, turned out very well.

Mark: (B) You have to give T.J. Brodie a ton of props for even getting on the ice after his medical episode at practice on November 14th. Brodie collapsed on the ice and had to be rushed to a hospital and he would eventually be released, return to the ice and play in 64 games total on the season. Brodie had 12 points post collapse, including goals in three of the Flames final four games before the season went on hiatus. The only issue is he was prone to long streaks without scoring. He had a 38 game goalless streak coming out his medical incident, stretching from November 30-March 1. That’s bad at any level. On the flip side, Brodie’s +7 was a welcome reprieve to a team that was mostly in the minus column on the season. Was it all Brodie or was part of it being paired with Mark Giordano? We may find out sooner than later as Ramus Andersson is knocking on the door of that top defensive pairing and he’s a UFA after 2019-20. All in all, considering what happened to Brodie, a “B” seems more than suffice.

Maddie: (B) Like Mark mentioned, to me, I think the biggest thing here is that I’m honestly so surprised (and obviously thrilled) that Brodie was able to come back after the medical situation he was dealing with in the fall. But as far as his season goes, I’m feeling pretty good about it. Consistency in the scoring department was an issue, but he was still able to kick in some offense, and it’s hard to overstate how welcome that was, on this team that was often struggling to come by offense. The underlying numbers were a real strong point, as the Flames got the better of both the shot quantity and quality differentials when he was on the ice (52.07 CF% and 52.25 xGF%), and that was really nice to see. I wouldn’t say that he blew the doors off this season, but I would say he was really solid.
