Mark: (B) Two years with the Flames and two of his best seasons in the NHL. We all know Derek Ryan took the long road to being an NHL regular, but his patience and perseverance have turned him into one of the Flames players you can always count on. The 29 year old NHL veteran was set to crack the 30 point plateau for the 4th straight season if the NHL didn’t shut down due to Covid-19 and I think he would have easily surpassed that if the season didn’t go on hiatus. The Flames have one more season of Derek Ryan as he’s on the books for 2020-21 and I for one and thrilled to see what another full year will do for Ryan and the Flames bottom six. He’s the perfect steadying presence and provides a spark when Calgary needs it.
Gordie: (B+) Whatever your opinion of Ryan may be, he is without a doubt the most consistent player on the Flames. Including this shortened season, his past three years’ points per game are: (.48), (.47), (.43). He’s been the exact type of player you need in your bottom six, and is a valuable right-hand shot on a team devoid of that. You could and maybe should argue that he is Brad Treliving’s best UFA signing. It will be interesting to see what kind of season he has on his final year of this contract, and could very well earn another from the Flames.
