Mark: (C) Another season and another year of missed games due to injuries for Travis Hamonic. The Flames defenceman only played in 50 of the team’s 70 games and it was hit or his when he was out there. Hamonic’s 12 points were the third lowest point total of his career and his 50 games played were also the third lowest of his career. One thing you can never accuse Hamonic of putting his face and body before the team. This is the second season in a row for Hammer where he racked up miles on IR and when he was out on the ice he was just “ok.” But with that said, most of the Flames defence was “meh” for good stretches of the season. The Manitoba native’s contract is over once the season is finished and you have to wonder if he will be a priority signing in the off season, especially when his name has been floated in trade talks in the past.
Flash: (C-) Last year Hamonic had his best advanced statistical output he had ever achieved in his career, this season he had the second worst advanced statistical output of a year. Something has to be going on because 5 out of the previous 6 seasons he had a positive CF% and this year he popped off 49.19. His xG% was about average for his career at 48.55% and his scoring chances were down below 50 to 48.31%. There’s always the possibility that he could return to form next year, but he’s gonna come at an increased price. My recommendation is for the Flames to walk away from a price tag they might look at as more of a hindrance down the line than as a viable asset for next season.
