Mark: (A) The Flames got a full glimpse into what the future with Andrew Mangiapane could look like and it looks amazing. Mangiapane played in a career high of 68 games this season, up from his previous best of 44 and his point totals climbed dramatically. The Toronto native notched a career high 32 points, which easily passed his career high of 13 in 2018-19. Mangiapane was a steady player for all of the regular season and the 6th round pick is clearly one of the players Calgary can build upon to grow this young and talented core that they have. I don’t think there is anyone who isn’t excited to see what he brings in the playoffs or over the stretch of an 82 game regular season.
Flash: (A) Value found late in a draft is a very good way to build up an NHL roster. Mangiapane, he of a 53 CF%, a 52.94 GF%, a 53.40 xGF%, and a 55.22 SCF%. If you’re not into numbers and don’t want to learn the lingo I’ll spell it out for you, that’s really good, especially tremendous when you realize we snagged him in the 6th round. And before anyone claims it was just luck, his PDO (which combines his sh% with his on-ice sv%) is only 1.003. Mangiapane has earned his spot in the Flames top 6, and I’m excited to see where he goes from here. Brava. Bravo, Trés Bien.
MGMacGillivray: (A) After the Flames played hardball with Mangiapane last summer, ultimately signing him for 715k (just 15k over the minimum), he earned a big raise this summer. He finished with 17 goals and roughly a 21 goal pace over 82 games which was solid for a guy in his first full NHL season. Mangiapane really started pick it up down the last stretch of the season before stoppage, compiling nine goals and 17 points in the final 19 games compare to 15 points in the previous 49 games. With the changing salary landscape after COVID, his negotiations might become very interesting, but the Flames should be exploring all options to get him on a deal with term as he likely becomes a full-time top six winger next year.
