The Morning After The Evening After
Calgary Flames 3 - Florida Panthers 0
The Flames finished out a successful five game road trip East with a 3-0 victory over the Florida Panthers Sunday afternoon. The Flames were playing back to back day games so it was interesting to see how they would respond. Coming into the game Calgary was 4-4-0 in the second game of a back to back and they impressed from the puck drop. Mainly Johnny Gaudreau.
Gaudreau had a rough few days with his grandfather dying Saturday, but Gaudreau looked like he channeled that sadness/anger into superior play on Sunday. He scored, had an assist, had 5 SOG and was a +1. He had a penalty shot as well that he didn’t score on, but he looked dangerous for most of the afternoon.
Cam Talbot showed why he should be getting more opportunities to start as he stopped all 38 Panthers shots he faced on the day. That improved his record to 10-10-1 on the season. More importantly Calgary finished the road trip with a record of 3-1-1 and they vaulted into 6th place in the Western Conference.
Tidbits
-Shut ‘Em Up, Shut ‘Em Down: Cam Talbot registered his second shut out of the season, the most he’s had since he held seven opponents scoreless back in 2016-17 as a member of the Edmonton Oilers. And his blankings this year haven’t been a cake walk. He’s faced a total of 92 shots over both games.
-Picking Up Steam: Despite constant criticism, Johnny Gaudreau is starting to build momentum. Gaudreau had a goal and an assist last night and he has a point in 13 of his last 17 games and 4 multi point games over that stretch. He’s also shooting the puck a lot more over that stretch, collecting 52 SOG in those 17 games. His five SOG led the Flames today.
-Holy Drought Batman!: We all know this has been a trying season for T.J. Brodie between his medical episode and lack of offence, but he was able to find the back of the net Sunday in the Flames 3-0 victory over the Panthers. How long has it been since #7 scored? Would you believe it if I said 37 games? Yup. Before he scored this afternoon it was back on November 27th at Buffalo when he last lit the lamp.
