Flames Best #40 Of All Time: Alex Tanguay

Tanguay bounced around a lot as a player, but was very solid in his time with the Flames.

The #40 only came down to two players and even though my heart said Fred Brathwaite, my brain knows Alex Tanguay is the best player in Flames history to wear the #40. Not that there were a lot of players who did, but either way Tanguay had an outstanding career with the Calgary Flames.

Alex Tanguay arrived in Calgary prior to the 2006-07 season with a list of NHL credentials. He’d already played in 440 games with the Colorado Avalanche and won a Stanley Cup with them in 2001. So upon arrival, expectations for the Tanguay were high and he did not disappoint in that first season with the Flames. In 2006-07, the Quebec native would play in 81 games, score 22 goals and dish out a career high 59 assists. That 81 points would go on to be a career best for Tanguay. His next season with the Flames would see his point totals drop by 23 points (58) while playing in only three less games (78). Unhappy with the Flames system, Tanguay was traded during the 2008 NHL Entry Draft to the Montreal Canadiens. He would spend one season in Montreal before signing a one year contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning, which led to him returning to the Flames for the start of the 2010-11 season.

His first year back as a Flame would be solid. In 2010-11 he would play in 79 games, collecting 69 points which would be the 6th and final time he would eclipse the 60+ barrier in his career. Twice it would be with Calgary. Injuries would start to pile up again for Alex Tanguay as he would play in only 104 games for the Flames over the following two years. Even though he only suited up 64 times in 2011-12 he still managed to knock in 13 goals and pile up 36 assists, which was the third best point total (49) on the team that season.

The Flames were not a good team during Tanguay’s second run with the franchise and deciding it was time to tear it down, Calgary traded Tanguay to the Colorado Avalanche during the summer of 2013. He would go on to to play three more seasons between the Avs and Arizona Coyotes before calling it a career after the 2016-17 seasons as no team elected to sign him as a free agent.

In two different stops with the Flames Tanguay would play in 342 games over five seasons, record 86 goals and hand out 198 assists. His playoff success would come mostly with Colorado as Calgary would only make the post season twice during his first stint with team. He would play in 13 total Stanley Cup Playoff games with Calgary, with 8 points to his credit (1G-8A).
