It took a few days, but we all wanted to soak in the beauty.......and horror that is the Adidas and NHL’s reveal of the Retro Remix designs for next season. Now, there’s been a bunch of “rankings” of these sets, so we aren’t going to go into every single one. Instead we’re breaking new ground and doing a Top 5/Bottom 5 list of our favorites and least favorites. We should probably copyright this as something like this has most likely never been done. So, less chat, more rankings. Here’s what the M&G staff have as their five favs and five least favs because we know you couldn’t carry on without this information.

Best 5
- Calgary Flames (Blasty): Did you expect anything different? This is my all-time favorite jersey and it took long enough, but at least it’s back. I wouldn’t have changed a thing, but the updated striping pattern works just fine. Now, who’s jersey to get? (too bad Hathaway is gone because it would have been him)
- NJ Devils (reverse Christmas?): The Devils should just go back to these full time because it’s the best uniform color scheme they’ve ever had. Though it leans heavy on the green instead of the classic red, it’s better than their stale red & black combination. Anyone who’s listened to us talk jerseys knows this is one of my favorite looks because Sean Burke wore these colors and he’s an absolute favorite of mine.
- LA Kings (Classic Purple): Again, another team that should never have changed. I mean, I get it. There’s zero change Ice Cube is ever rolling in a purple and gold Kings lid, so the silver and black to match the Raiders made sense. But it NEVER looked as good as their classic gold and purple scheme. I love these......but Drew Doughty still sucks.
- Colorado Avalanche (Nords Tribute): When it comes to honoring where you came from, the Avalanche nailed it. They went with the classic Quebec Nordiques uniform design, BUT, BUT (looking at you Carolina and we’ll deal with you in a minute) they used the Avalanche color scheme. Just a perfect, crisp design.
- Minnesota Wild (NStars theme): Michael and I are going to get into a verbal slap fight over this in the podcast later this week, but I REALLY like this look. He seems to think it’s deserving of a $5 Footlong, but I like the harkening back to the old Minnesota North Stars days and they clearly can’t use that look because of Dallas (thanks for not going with the “anatomy bull,” aka Taurus jersey) so this is as close as we will get to a modern day Minnesota North Stars look. Well done. You’re wrong Michael.
Worst 5
- Carolina Hurricanes (Fraud Whalers): Now, this TOTALLY contradicts my statement above about the Av’s, but I hate when the Canes “honor” the Whalers because the Whalers belong in Hartford. Only in Hartford. Only the ACTUAL Hartford Whalers should be able to wear those colors. What I would approve, however, is the Whalers design with the current Carolina Hurricanes color scheme (see the Avalanche you meat heads). That way, everyone wins. But I will never accept the Hurricanes wearing the actual Hartford Whalers jerseys and colors because they aren’t the Whalers. Yes, this is a hill I’m willing to die on.
- Anaheim Ducks (Muscle Duck): Look at it. No other explanation needed.
- NY Islanders (What Changed): I have ZERO respect for the Islanders for wussing out and not going with the Gorton’s Fisherman logo. Those jerseys were/are FANTASTIC. Yes, that was a dark time in franchise history, but time heals all wounds and that logo is TIGHT. There’s nothing wrong with their “alternate” look now, but you fall into my Bottom Five for having no creativity and cowering in the face of what was a super easy decision. I’m disappointed in you NY.
- Washington Capitals (Screaming Eagle): Diagonal stripes on a jersey look dumb. That eagle SUCKS. That is all.
- Columbus Blue Jackets (Strip Joint Neon Lights): Columbus, why not use the Cannon? Why? Why the cheesy neon light sign looking CB that looks like a bad casino sign in Vegas or the sign at the entrance to a strip club that serves pizza......so I’ve heard or something. It’s just gross. The logo. And the pizza. So I’ve heard.

- Minnesota Wild: So damn sharp. I do not care what anyone says about the Subway or Sprite comparisons, it works for them it works for Minny. I will go out and outright say this is the best jersey the Wild have ever had in their existence. Ever.
- LA Kings: You can NOT go wrong with that colour scheme. Going to Black and Silver when the kings did helped promote their brand and grow their local popularity at the time. It worked, and now going back to this purple and yellow design full time is highly recommended.
- Calgary Flames: Blasty’s back baybeeeee. I pre-ordered one within the first 90 minutes of release and it will be the gold standard of my jersey collection for decades. If you don’t like Blasty that’s fine, but stop ruining what other people enjoy and let them enjoy it.
- Buffalo Sabres: I could do without the written Buffalo at the bottom, but they stuck true with the design from the Briere-Miller days of success. Switching the colours from Red & Black to the fan fav white/blue/gold was a can’t miss. Also the Goat heads back and they gave him glitter. A+
- NJ Devils: Waaaaay better than the last time they tried the red/green theme. Just aesthetically pleased the eyes. Maybe I like it so much because Christmas is around the corner, or maybe I just like it because it’s actually a sharp jersey. (It’s both)
Worst 5
- Dallas Stars: If a gave a 5 year old a green crayon and told them to draw exactly 6 lines they would have come up with something better than this. It especially hurts when you see fan concepts that kick the ever living crap out of what they actually released. Throw this one in the dump immediately.
- Detroit Red Wings: If you’re gonna play like a practice squad you may as well dress like a practice squad in practice jerseys.
- NY Islanders: You not only didn’t bring back Fishsticks the legendary fisherman, you straight up did nothing. GM Lou’s idea of a fun afternoon is eating 17 saltine crackers and watching paint dry. This is confirmed.
- Columbus Blue Jackets: The red with the white shoulders instantly made me go “uh, Nuh uh”. I can appreciate the old logo but just looking at it nothing is appealing. There’s lots they could have done, maybe they could have traded more draft picks away for 2 months of a graphic design team.
- Pittsburgh Penguins: this style popped on the black jerseys and just kind is meh on the white. I wanted the 2D penguin back, and he should have came back. Hell you could have given the penguin a mullet and it would sell more than these. The other issue is that the Penguins have had as many jersey reboots as anyone not named Chicago so they were running out of ideas.

- LA Kings (Royalty Purple & Gold)
- Quebec Nordiques —> Colorado Avalanche - I like the classic jerseys.
- Anaheim (Mighty) Ducks #8 Selanne - wish list.
- Hartford Whalers —> Carolina Hurricanes
- Florida Panthers/Calgary Flames (Blasty) - who doesn’t like a work horse, that breathes out fire when it’s pissed off. I still like the Flaming C better tho.
Worst 5
- Las Vegas Golden Knights
- Vancouver Canucks - not a fan of the blue/green fade.
- St.Louis Blues - ketchup, mustard.
- Detroit Redwings
- Columbus Bluejackets/Phoenix (Arizona) CoYotes - there’s a lot going on in this jersey.

Best 5
1. Calgary Flames
Hometown bias. I don’t care. It’s gorgeous.
2. Arizona Coyotes
If you’re going to make a third jersey, go a little bit crazy. I’m a sucker for a purple jersey and this one is definitely going in my collection.
3. LA Kings
Every single part of this jersey is beautiful. The logo and colour scheme are just tremendous.
4. Tampa Bay Lightning
I’ve always liked this Lightning logo more than their other ones and the striping just works for me.
5. Anaheim Ducks
Come on, it’s a classic. You can be all conservative for your regular home and away jerseys but your third needs to be different. Anyone who doesn’t like this obviously doesn’t like fun. Alternate jerseys that are a little wild sell, conservative ones don’t.
Worst 5
1. Dallas Stars
Dallas always seems to have the best team name, logo, concept to put onto jerseys yet they haven’t executed well whatsoever this offseason. Between the neon green atrocity and now this “make everything white” look, it’s just not good.
2. Minnesota Wild
I don’t get it. This seems like something a Minneapolis Subway franchise would wear when they’re doing a gameday ticket promotion. I love the original North Stars concept, but if you’re doing it, don’t half-a$$ it.
3. NY Islanders
They clearly just forgot to submit a concept. Like they had so many better options including The Fisherman which I think everybody wanted. Again, if you go a little crazy with your alternates, you’ll sell a ton, especially to people who might not be fans of your team. These days it’s all about revenue and I doubt the Isles sell many of these.
4. Nashville Predators
Nashville may rival Dallas’ creativity department in jersey design. After their horrendous winter classic jerseys with Nashville Predators in semi-cursive writing, they plopped out this design which is just similar enough to their home jersey that it won’t sell, but different enough to be declared ugly.
5. Detroit Red Wings
I will admit that the Red Wings look is one that you can’t screw with and obviously there isn’t a lot of room for creative space with it. I just wish they had done something more creative than just adding a few silver stripes to a white jersey with logo. I would’ve strongly preferred a red jerseys as well, these are eminently forgettable and don’t serve their fans well enough.
Now that we’ve given you our picks, let’s see what you think! Vote in our poll below or use the comments section and show us who did well and who did not with their jersey designs!!!
