#12 - Connor Mackey
2019-20 Team: Minnesota State University (NCAA)
Signed as a Free Agent March 20, 2020
2019 Ranking: N/A
You don’t have to be a high draft pick to be considered a good prospect, or even be drafted at all. For Connor Mackey, he can attempt to follow the path of one of the greatest undrafted defencemen in Mark Giordano
While Gio earned his contract via the OHL, Mackey is coming off a successful collegiate career in the NCAA with Minnesota State University. In his final season in 2019-20, he posted 7-17-24 in 36 games, which was nearly a duplicate of his 2018-19, in which he put up 7-18-25 in 42 games. At 6’2’’ Mackey is solid in all three zones, and he was +23 as Minnesota went 31-2-5.
After signing in March, Mackey was invited to the Flames Return to Play camp, where he played on the right side and fit in pretty solidly. There is a logjam for the Flames in the bottom d-pairing, but there still seems to be a high chance Mackey will play NHL minutes this season.
What do you think of Mackey’s final ranking?
