2020 NHL Mock Draft
It’s that time of year where the brain trusts at all the SBN Hockey sites start thinking about the NHL Draft. With it being mere days away, this is more exciting and relevant than ever.
The Flames own the 19th pick in the first round, which is kind of no man’s land for an immediate impact player. If the Flames are anything like us, they’ll most likely go with the BPA waiting for them at their slot.
So after much consultation, the staff at M&G decided to draft defenceman Jeremie Poirier for the Flames with our pick in the draft.
Poirier is a 6’1”, 196 lb, left shot defenceman who plays for the Saint John Sea Dogs in the QMJHL. In his three seasons with Saint John the 18 year old has played in 126 games, collecting 76 points, including two in the current season after only one game. Not only is he a contributor in the offensive end, but he’s physical all over the rink. In his first two full seasons he’s amassed 95 PIM, including 50 in 2019-20.
We decided to go for a blueliner at this spot seeing the Flames are going to need some people to fill those roles sooner than later. Mark Giordano isn’t getting any younger and Calgary will most likely be moving on from T.J. Brodie and Travis Hamonic. Clearly a player like Poirier isn’t a “ready now” impact player, but he could be a solid addition to Calgary’s growing stable of young defencemen.
Here’s the Saint John Sea Dogs highlight package for their star defenceman:
