Though he shares a last name with an infamous Flames draft pick, 2020 third-round pick Jeremie Poirier shares the most characteristics with Oliver Kylington. Like Kylington in the McDavid draft, Poirier is a highly skilled offensive defenceman that was projected to be a first round pick. However also like Kylington, questions about defensive play lead to a significant drop in draft position. Using the pick acquired in the move-down trade in the first round with the New York Rangers, the Flames selected Poirier in the 3rd round, 72nd overall.

The Saint John Sea Dogs defender lead all QMJHL defencemen with 20 goals, and trailed only team mate William Villeneuve in defensive points, with 53 in 64 games. His breakout year wasn’t so good on the other end, as he finished -25, and is -66 over 2 QMJHL seasons.

He’s off to another solid start in 2020-21, with 5 points in 6 games, but is -4.
