Flames Sign RW Josh Leivo

The Flames continue adding forward depth

The Calgary Flames have made another addition to the club, this time adding right winger Josh Leivo to the team on a one-year 875k deal. Leivo joins the team coming off a career-best but injury shortened season with the Vancouver Canucks. Leivo had seven goals and 19 points with the Canucks through 36 games this past season, but a fractured kneecap before Christmas ended his season.

A former third round pick of the Maple Leafs in 2011, Leivo spent five years developing before moving into the Leafs lineup where he struggled to maintain regular ice time. After a trade to Vancouver, Leivo’s ice time and performanc took off with 37 points over total games with the club.

The Flames will be hoping he can re-capture some of his magic from early this past season and turn in a strong year in the bottom six with the club. Crucially Leivo is also a right handed shot, something which the Flames are limited in yet again. Along with the signings of Nikita Nesterov and Dominik Simon, the Flames have focused on making low-risk but potentially medium to high reward signings as their cap situation forced them out of the market for any big players still available.

With Leivo’s contract, the Flames now have roughly $1M of cap space with 13F, 6D, and 2G on the roster with Oliver Kylington still to be signed. Looks like this will be more or less the roster heading into next season barring a major deal.
