The team the Canadian media raves over constantly and the Calgary Flames each have young stars who remain unsigned as the leaves start to turn. So that got us thinking, who’s going to sign with their respective team first? Will it be the Maple Leafs 22 year old Ontario native and his 67 goals over his first three seasons? Or will it be the Flames 21 year old Arizona native and his 71 goals in his first three seasons?
Each player plays an important part of each team’s futures, but both currently remain unsigned. As if their stats and importance aren’t similar enough, both the Flames and Leafs are hurting in the pocketbook. Clearly Toronto is in worse shape with $0 left to spend (thanks capfriendly.com), so something has to give. Calgary has a little over $7 million left (thanks again capfriendly.com), which at face value isn’t bad at all. However, they still have to sign Matthew Tkachuk and Andrew Mangiapane. Tkachuk will easily take up most of the $7 million, if not more.
So, what we’ve learned here in this abbreviated, poorly constructed math lesson is this: the Flames and Leafs have superstar players that need to be signed, but money is an issue. With all of that being taken in to account, who signs first? Vote in our poll below!
