Time to focus on just hockey!

Well, after dragging on for next three months, the Flames have finally re-signed Matthew Tkachuk. The deal is a three year bridge with an AAV of 7M. This will give Tkachuk the highest cap hit on the team, just as we expected for most of the offseason. As expected, Tkachuk’s deal will be heavily backloaded in salary, with the third year of his deal paying him 9M, ensuring his qualifying offer will be huge.

Tkachuk will now report to Calgary and take care of his fitness testing, and we’ll likely see his first pre-season action on Saturday against the Edmonton Oilers. This is a big day for the Flames organization.

As things stand right now, the Flames are about 653k over the cap, so a small corresponding move will need to be made, but they don’t have to ship out a good piece for pennies on the dollar.
