#3 - Sean Monahan
Team: Calgary Flames (NHL)
Drafted in 2013, 1st Round, Pick 6
Last Year’s Ranking: #2
Sean Monahan proved he had another level. In 78 games in 2018-19, Monahan set career highs in goals (34), assists (48), points (82), powerplay goals (12), and powerplay points (23). With the newly added Elias Lindholm beautifully rounding out a top line that had already boasted elite status, Monahan thrived offensively, seeing his career high point total jump by 18 points from last years 64.
However, another late season injury (broken thumb) really slowed Monahan’s production into the final months. That continued into the playoffs where he only recorded a single goal and assist in the short 5 game disappointment at the hands of Colorado. Monahan’s effectiveness as a first line center was brought into question during parts of the season, as the Flames were unable to make any noise at all come postseason. A bounce back season for Monahan would mean staying healthy, and remaining a consistent threat for all 82 games.
Where do you think Monahan should’ve been ranked?
