Matthew Phillips jumped up three spots from last season to #14 this year and justifiably so. The Calgary native had a very respectable first season in Stockton with Heat, playing in 65 games and tallying up 38 points. That was Phillips’ first real foray in the AHL as his only other action was the one game he played in 2016-17.
Phillips has been a consistent points producer prior to reaching the AHL while he was playing with the Victoria Royals of the WHL, including being named WHL Rookie of The Year in 2015-16. In four season with the Royals he played in a total of 215 games and produced 281 total points, with his best season coming in 2017-18 where he had 112 points. He was a fairly even player in WHL where he scored 136 goals, but also handed out 145 assists.
Phillips is another player in the Flames stable that trends towards the “smaller” side as he stands at 5’7” and 145 lbs, but that shouldn’t be a deterrent. Phillips is highly regarded and if his previous performance is any indication the Flames have a potential point producer awaiting them in Stockton.
