Recap

Are you awake, because if you are you deserve a medal. The Flames came into Arizona with a three game losing streak and will head home to Calgary with a four game losing streak after a 2-0 loss to the Coyotes. The Flames once again ran into a hot goaltender, this time Darcy Kuemper, and couldn’t muster any kind of offence for seventh straight game.

Calgary came out like a team that was going to keep piling goals on the Coyotes (18 coming into this game), but Arizona played some solid defence and got very good goaltending which helped them avoid a season sweep at the hands of the Flames.

This game could have ended at least 4-0, but Arizona had a lot of trouble putting the puck in an empty net towards the end of the game. The Coyotes passed when they should have shot and when they did shoot, they hit the post.

Mike Smith was solid tonight, the second goal was a mess and his fault, but the team in front of him was no help. Calgary fired 30 shots at the Arizona net, but as has been the case too often as of late, nothing went it. Calgary was also gifted two power plays and went 0-2 and only had two SOG while having the man advantage.

Final Thoughts

Yuck. It’s high time for the Flames offence to find itself and get going. The Flames have scored only five goals during this current four game losing streak, but it hasn’t been a scoring bonanza when they were winning. Calgary hasn’t scored more than three goals since a 4-2 victory over the NY Islanders back on February 20th. To put it all into perspective: Calgary had outscored the Coyotes 18-4 over the previous three games, yet tonight they came up with nothing.

Flame Of The Game

Mike Smith (G): Smith wins by default because there wasn’t anyone playing in front of him to step up and take this coveted award. The Flames keeper stopped 23 of the 25 shots he faced and it’s REALLY hard to win when the team in front of you can’t score to save their life.
