NHL Standings

The Flames will finish up a mini two game road trip in Arizona when they pay a visit to the Coyotes Thursday night. The Flames have now dropped three straight, yet they still have a three point lead ahead of the San Jose Sharks in both the Western Conference and Pacific Division. Calgary’s once potent offence has dried up as they’ve only scored five goals during their current skid. But it’s not just the last three contests that have followed this pattern. During Calgary’s seven game winning streak they only scored more than three goals three times, while only netting two goals three times and their top scorers have symbolized those struggles. In their last six games Johnny Gaudreau, Sean Monahan, Matthew Tkachuk and Elias Lindholm have combined for 4 goals total. Not good enough.

The Coyotes meanwhile have come back from the dead and are right in the thick of the things in the Western Conference WC race. The ‘Yotes have won 9 out of their last 12, including a recent six game losing streak that was snapped with a loss to the Anaheim Ducks. This recent run of success puts the Coyotes a mere three points behind the Minnesota Wild for the final Wild Card spot out West. All things considered the Coyotes are a nice story seeing they have scored the 4th fewest goals in the NHL, but have surrendered only 185 goals on the season, good for 8th best in the league.

The Flames have owned Arizona this year, taking all three meetings so far by a score of 18-4. The last time these two met up was on February 18th with the Flames winning 5-2.
