Calgary Flames at Washington Capitals [Game 52]

Published

on

The Calgary Flames are back and are set to take on the defending Stanley Cup Champion Washington Capitals in the District of Columbia. The Flames are coming out of the All-Star break and have been torrid hot as they’ve gone 8-1-1 in their last ten games. The run saw them take a six point lead over the second place San Jose Sharks and they have a game in hand to boot.

The Flames will go with Mike Smith in tonight’s contest. Bill Peters noted that there’s nothing wrong with David Rittich, but pointed to Smith’s puck handling as the reason that Smith will start tonight. It’s a peculiar decision for a team that’s had more than enough rest of late and doesn’t play again until Sunday.

The Flames will mercifully get to miss Alexander Ovechkin in tonight’s game. Ovechkin was injured by his own teammate T.J. Oshie in their last game and had to miss tonight’s contest by league rules anyway as he skipped the All-Star game. The Capitals have lost seven straight and are fighting for playoff positioning as the difference between first place in the Metropolitan and the final wild card spot is four points.

Game time is at 5:00 P.M. M.S.T.
