NHL Standings

The Flames will host the Carolina Hurricanes in an early afternoon tilt today at the Saddledome. The Flames come into this contest riding high on a seven game winning streak that has seen them become a dominant scoring team. Over that seven game stretch the Flames have scored four or more goals five times, something they had only five times in their previous 29 games. Sean Monahan has points in eight straight, including five goals. Johnny Gaudreau came alive against the Maple Leafs with a two goal performance, giving him points in seven of his last nine. The point? Calgary’s top players are starting to come our of their slumps and if you combine that with the efforts of Michael Frolik, Derek Ryan, Dillon Dube and Tobias Rieder, the Flames are going to be a dangerous team from here on out.

Speaking of dangerous, the Carolina Hurricanes have been impressive lately. They just had a three game winning streak snapped with a 1-0 loss to the Canucks Thursday night, but prior to that they had been rolling. The Canes had back to back six goal performances against the Minnesota Wild and Edmonton Oilers, making them 4-1-1 in their last six games. The outburst of goals pushed Carolina to 12th in the league in goals scored with 101 markers. Combine that with their 8th best 86 goals allowed and you can see why the Hurricanes are so successful.

The Flames dropped their first meeting with the Hurricanes back on October 29th by a score of 2-1. A win would give the Canes a season sweep of the Flames, something they have never done since they started playing each other twice a season back in 2014. Complicating matters for Carolina is they have lost eight of their last ten at the Saddledome.
