NHL Standings

The Flames will play the final game of their five game home-stand Friday night against the Detroit Red Wings. The Flames had their five game winning streak snapped Wednesday night with a 4-3 OT loss to the Buffalo Sabres. Despite the loss the Flames collected a point and have done so in 9 of their last 10 games. That point streak has held the Flames atop the Western Conference, two points ahead of the second place San Jose Sharks.

The Red Wings season has been a mess, but they are riding high on a two game winning streak. For many teams that might be nothing special, but when you’ve dropped 13 of 15 prior to winning two straight, you’ll take what you can get. Goal scoring has been the issue as the Wings have only scored more than three goals once over that stretch and they sit at 20th in the league in goals scored with 134. Compare that to their 156 GA which is 7th worst in the NHL and you can see how their season has spiraled out of control.

These two last met on January 2nd with the Flames winning 5-3. The Flames have one of the better home records (15-4-5) in the NHL and Detroit is a dumpster fire on the road with an 8-11-3 record away from their home rink. To make things worse the Flames have won three in a row at the Saddledome when the Red Wings visit Alberta.
