Recap

The Flames wrapped up back to back games against the Sharks with a 4-3 win Thursday night. While Tuesday night saw the Flames struggle with San Jose’s, let’s say. not top squad, last night was as close to a full dress rehearsal as you’ll get. Calgary scored 4 straight goals after giving up the opener and won their 4th game of the preseason in 9 tries. Calgary found themselves out-shot 26-22 and were 0-4 on the PP, yet they still managed to come out on top.

What was nice to see from the Flames tonight was their offseason acquisitions lending a major helping hand. Snake bitten all preseason, James Neal scored his first as a Flame, which turned out to be the eventual game winner at the 13:35 mark of the second period. Elias Lindholm also had a solid night picking up a goal and an assist, giving him his first of the preseason as well.

Mike Smith backstopped the Flames to the victory, stopping 23 of the 26 shots that came his way. This performance should settle some of the panic that was beginning to bubble around the Flames goaltending situation. Calgary hasn’t gotten stellar goaltending so far, but a performance like this from Smith should calm SOME of the panic.

Scoring

Calgary: Mark Giordano (Backlund), Elias Lindholm (Gaudreau). Travis Hamonic (Backlund, Ryan), James Neal (Lindholm, Hamonic)

San Jose: Antti Suomela (Karlsson, Labanc), Antti Suomela (Burns, Ryan), Timo Meier (Kane, Braun)

Flame Of The Game: Mikael Backlund

Backlund had a hand in 2 of the Flames goals, collecting 2 assists on the night.
