The Flames 8th preseason game wasn’t exactly a masterpiece, but they managed to escape with a 7-5 victory over the San Jose Sharks. The victory was Calgary’s 3rd of the preseason, but it was the second straight game where the goaltending wasn’t pretty. David Rittich surrendered 4 goals on 12 shots in the first period before giving way to Jon Gillies in the second period. Gillies fared better, giving up one goal on 11 shots over the final two frames.
While stopping the puck was an issue, the Flames offence stepped it up when they needed to. Calgary scored the first 3 goals of the second period, drawing even with San Jose before getting 2 third period goals that put the game out of reach. Johnny Gaudreau scored twice for the Flames and Austin Czarnik continued his strong showing with his 4th goal of the preseason.
While the 7 goals looks nice on paper, the Flames have some work to do as this wasn’t exactly San Jose’s “A Team” on the ice last night. Calgary will have another shot to clean things up against the Sharks on Thursday night when they travel to San Jose.
