Another year, another 27+ goal campaign from Sean Monahan. Ho hum. 2017-18 was even more impressive for Monahan as he tied his career high in goals with 31, despite playing 74 games and essentially being held together by duct tape for the final month of his season.
Monahan also set a career high in points with 64, which was a 71 point pace had he played the full 82 games. There’s no exact timetable for how long Monahan played through his injuries, but they were quite significant. He was essentially playing with one hand prior to his wrist surgery, which was quickly followed by two hernia surgeries. Ouch.
Monahan played most of the season on a high 30’s pace for goals, and there’s no reason to believe he couldn’t come close or even top 40 goals next year. He’s a very consistent scorer who has really made a name for himself in the dirty areas in front of the net during his time in Calgary.
I’m not even going to go into his whole omission from the NHL’s Top 20 Centres this year, because that’s just how Sean Monahan has been most of his career. He flies under the wire with the stardom of Johnny Gaudreau or with Connor McDavid up north, but for those who watch Monahan, man he’s a heck of a player.
