#10: Brett Kulak
Position: D
Age: 24
Team: Calgary Flames
Draft: 2012, Round 4 #105th Overall
Last Year: #16
Voting Points: 2007
It’s amazing what a full season will do for a player. Brett Kulak jumped from #16 to #10 in this year’s version of the Top 25 Under 25 and the climb up the ladder was absolutely warranted. Kulak’s play got him rewarded with a 1 year, $900k deal in arbitration on July 25th and now the Flames have another steady hand on their blue line for 2018-19.
Kulak’s first full NHL season was last year and he proved to be worthy of a full time gig. Kulak suited up for 71 games in 2017-18 and was never a nightmare on the ice. He was very workman like and a constant in the defensive zone. He was buried on the Flames bottom D pairing with Michael Stone, but even that didn’t hamper him or tie his hands. He played solid defence and chipped in a little in the offensive zone (2G 6A).
Kulak’s play should get him a look this training camp with the Flames second defensive pairing. The trade of Dougie Hamilton opens up a slot in the top 4 and Kulak could easily move up to pair with Travis Hamonic. Will that happen? Only time will tell, but Brett Kulak certainly has earned the chance to move up on the depth chart.
