#17: Matthew Phillips
Position: Centre
Age: 20
Team: Victoria Royals (WHL)
Drafted in 2016, 6th Round, Pick 166
Last Year Ranking: #21
Voting Points: 1198
Last season was Phillips’ third full season with the Victoria Royals of the WHL and he didn’t disappoint. The 20 year old centre continued his solid play, suiting up for 71 games and pumping in 112 points. The 100+ total was 22 points better than his previous career high in 2016-17. While upping his point total, he also cut down on his time in the penalty box as well. Phillips went from 50 to 32 PIM last season, which would correspond with his point totals climbing as well.
Phillips only saw 1 game in Stockton last season, so it’s clear the Flames aren’t rushing the 20 year old prospect from Calgary. Phillips is under contract with 2020-21 at $733,000. If he keeps up his torrid pace it will only be a matter of time before he’s knocking on the door.
