Flames Top 25 Under 25: #19 - Curtis Lazar

Will his potential ever be unlocked?

NHL: Calgary Flames at Vegas Golden Knights Stephen R. Sylvanie-USA TODAY Sports

#19: Curtis Lazar

Position: Right Wing

Age: 23

Team: Calgary Flames

Drafted in 2013, 1st Round, Pick 17 (Ottawa Senators)

Last Year Ranking: #14

Voting Points: 811

The 2018 version of the Top 25 Under 25 sees Curtis Lazar drop 5 spots from #14 to #19. Honestly, I’m surprised he’s this high. Lazar came to the Flames with little fanfare and he’s done nothing to make the fanbase believe that he will turn out to be the player Ottawa thought they were drafting back in 2013.

Lazar’s 2017-18 season saw him put up 12 points in 65 games, the second highest point total of his career. Lazar seemed to come and go in bursts, but never really got into anything that could be described as a groove. There’s a good chance that he is what he is: a 4th liner who grinds and will show flashes from time to time.

Lazar is under contract for this season only and will become an RFA when all is said and done. Truthfully, there is enough talent in Stockton that Lazar could become trade bait or just outright not signed at the end of the season. It would take a MASSIVE showing this season for Lazar to be part of the Flames long term plans, but Calgary’s management does seem enamored with the 23 year old from Salmon Arm, BC.
