Flames Top 25 Under 25: Best of the Rest

Going through the prospects outside of the top 25

Calgary Flames v Edmonton Oilers

After a few days of voting, we have now set our order for the 2018 edition of the Flames Top 25 Under 25! I’d like to thank everybody who took the time to get their votes in to help us decide our order this year.

So our points system for the rankings broke down as follows:

  • A 1st place vote would get you 25 points, a second place would get you 24 points and so on, a 25th place vote would get you 1 point, and anything 26th or lower would be 0 points.

With that in mind, here are the honourable mentions, and the rest.

Honourable Mentions

#26: LW Brett Pollock

Voting Points: 217

Acquired from Dallas in February 2016

Had a strong second half and continues to improve after being an afterthought prospect coming into last season.

#27: D Josh Healey

Voting Points: 205

Signed in March 2017

Put up 4 assists in 50 games with Stockton. Fell from #25 in last year’s rankings.

#28: C Linus Lindstrom

Voting Points: 202

Drafted in 2016, 4th Round, Pick 96

Spent the year in Sweden, looked decent at the World Juniors as well.

The Rest

#29: C Martin Pospisil

Voting Points: 163

Drafted in 2018, 4th Round, Pick 105

His 253 PIM in 49 games stands out, but he had a nice finish to the second half offensively.

#30: G Mason McDonald

Voting Points: 157

Drafted in 2014, 2nd Round, Pick 34

Struggled in the ECHL and looked out of place in the AHL.

#31: RW Zach Fischer

Voting Points: 111

Drafted in 2017, 5th Round, Pick 140

Ended up with Tri-City (WHL) and had 21 goals. Will turn pro in Stockton this year.

#32: LW Filip Sveningsson

Voting Points: 73

Drafted in 2017, 7th Round, Pick 202

Spent the year in the Swedish Hockey League and its minor system.

#36: LW Dmitri Zavgorodny

Voting Points: 52

Drafted in 2018, 7th Round, Pick 198

Personally had him much higher on my list, played in Rimouski (QMJHL) last year and put up 26 goals as a 17 year old.

#37: LW Demetrious Koumontzis

Voting Points: 49

Drafted in 2018, 4th Round, Pick 108

Most recently played high school hockey in Minnesota.

#38: LW Pavel Karnaukhov

Voting Points: 44

Drafted in 2015, 5th Round, Pick 136

Spent time with CSKA Moscow and their affiliate last year.

#39: C Mitchell Mattson

Voting Points: 17

Drafted in 2016, 5th Round, Pick 126

21 points with Sioux Falls Stampede (USHL) last year.

Not really a lot of surprises but it’s disappointing to see Mason McDonald continue to fall on our list after using a second round pick on him. No surprises that the 2018 picks are outside the Top 25, but I think they do have some potential to turn into good players down the road.

Watch out for #25 to come out either this weekend or early next week! Were there any players that you think should have been ranked higher? Leave a comment to tell us what you think thus far!
