MarkParkinson14: (B) Kulak came in as an unknown commodity and finished the season as one of the Flames better defenders. He certainly made a case for moving up in the blue line pairings for 2018-19 with his steady play. Kulak rarely made any egregious mistakes while spending the season on Calgary’s bottom D pairing. It could be argued that he deserves a spot on the second defence line instead of T.J. Brodie.
MGMacGillivray: (B+) I came into the season excited about Kulak and he ended up being one of the Flames most consistent defenders. At times he easily looked like the Flames third best defender behind the top pairing. While Kulak wasn’t a world beater by any means at the offensive end of the ice, he was very consistent defensively and didn’t make any huge mistakes. His passing and breakouts were solid. Kulak is only 24 so there’s still room for him to grow, and should the Flames trade Brodie, I wouldn’t hate seeing him in a Top 4 role next year.
MilhouseFirehouse: (B) When I sat down and thought about it, I didn’t recall hearing Kulak’s name come up often over the course of the season, be it in-game or in discussion. And when you‘re the type of defenseman Brett Kulak is, I think that’s exactly what you want to hear. He held down the stay-at-home end of things, and when tasked with venturing into the offensive end of things, didn’t constantly turn the puck over or overthink it. And frankly, on a blue line with as many overly-discussed (for better or worse) names on it as this one, somebody who shows up and does their job so well that it doesn’t catch your eye is absolutely a welcome relief. Certainly should have at least the 5D or maybe even 4D spot locked down come training camp.
