Our Individual Grades

MarkParkinson14: (C) Garnet Hathaway is what he is and that’s not a knock on him at all. He was pushed into a 3rd line role when in reality, he’s probably better suited to the 4th line. Hathaway got into a career high 59 games this season and produced 13 points, also a career high. The problem with his season is he came out hot. Seven of his 13 points were recorded in December and then he kind of fell off the map. He did lead the Flames in PIM (88), so there’s that. Hathaway should be slotted on the 4th line and that should make some of his short comings a little more acceptable.

MGMacGillivray: (C-) I think this can be pinned on the coaching staff more than Hathaway, but the fact that he was on the third line most of year was ridiculous considering his minimal offensive output. Had Jankowski and Bennett had better a better winger, I think they may have had a much better season. I like the physical play of Hathaway and his willingness to antagonize, but he’s simply a fourth liner. If the new coach uses him as such, I don’t have a problem with him, but he just didn’t add a ton and clearly wasn’t working in the top nine. If it comes down to it, I’d rather see a prospect have his spot next year, but if he’s a fourth line or 13th forward, that’s fine too.

RenuSahota: (C+) I was a fan of #21 Garnet (dodecahedron) Hathaway. Now a RFA he contributed little in points (13), however had the highest PIM (88) … both sound bad.

MilhouseFirehouse: (C-) Hath was effective in a physical role for a chunk of the year, fighting the right people at the right times, crashing creases and bodies, and playing Pest Number Two behind Tkachuk. When that was happening, he was a regular in the lineup. When it wasn’t, Hathaway was invisible or in Stockton or munching popcorn in press boxes. He has upside as an every day roleplayer, but to hit that he has to do it every day.
