Fan Poll Friday: Does Mike Smith Need More Rest?

One game does not make the man, but is Mike Smith carrying too much of the load?

NHL: Tampa Bay Lightning at Calgary Flames Sergei Belski-USA TODAY Sports

Fan Poll Friday

Let’s be clear, we aren’t suggesting anything here, just asking. Mike Smith has without a doubt been the Flames MVP so far this season. He’s held the Flames in games where the offence hasn’t helped him and he’s gotten them a point. Thursday night’s collapse was clearly his worst game of the season as he surrendered 4 soft goals in a row and the Flames 2 goal lead against the Lightning turned into a 7-4 loss.

Smith is carrying a HUGE workload with the Flames this season, having played in 42 of the Flames 51 games this season. David Rittich has shown to be a more than capable back up and it’s not like earlier this season where the Flames had no option in the back up role. So, is it time to give Smith a little more rest and let Rittich play, ONLY to keep Smitty fresh? Smith is clearly the Flames best goaltender, but would it be smart to give him a little more rest in case the Flames do make a playoff push?
