News came out today that Mike Smith isn’t available for the Flames when they travel to Boston to take on the Bruins Tuesday night. There’s 2 ways to look at this: glass half full, glass half empty. The half empty looks at this as the sky is falling and Smith is going to be done for some time. Glass half full says that ALLEGEDLY David Rittich was going to start in Boston anyway, so maybe it’s a way to give Smith some routine maintenance.
Either way the Flames won’t have their top netminder with them as they travel to take on one of the hottest teams in the NHL in the Bruins. Rittich has proven more than stable when filling in for Smith and if it’s a day to day type deal the Flames should be fine. It would also make sense that the Flames would call Jon Gillies up from Stockton to backup Rittich in Smith’s absence.
This situation is constantly evolving, so stay tuned as updates become available.

David Rittich will start in goal for #Flames vs. #Bruins tomorrow. Glen Gulutzan said Mike Smith will be further evaluated today and the team will know more later today or tomorrow. I expect Jon Gillies will be recalled from @AHLHeat today. pic.twitter.com/yWz7fL7bq5
