Just as Mike Smith was gaining traction and giving the Flames two solid and dependable goaltenders, he got hurt. Smith was yanked in Calgary's 6-5, come from behind victory over the Philadelphia Flyers after the second period. Smith gave up 4 goals and then wasn't seen from again. After the game Calgary announced the veteran goaltender was injured.
Today Calgary recalled Jon Gillies from Stockton to take over as the backup keeper for the Flames. Mike Smith is listed as day to day so this could be a brief stop for Gillies.
Jon Gillies saw some time at the end of last year when Smith was hurt and the results were mixed.
With how well David Rittich has been playing, this is an opportunity for Gillies to show the Flames what he's got or it could end up being a brief showcase for other teams to see what Gillies has to offer.
Ryan Lomberg was sent back to Stockton this afternoon as well.
