The Flames added 2 new alternate captains to their stable of patched leaders today. Matthew Tkachuk and Mikael Backlund will join Sean Monahan sporting the “A” on their jersey this season. Monahan has been a mainstay as an alternate captain, while Mikael Backlund has worn the “A” in spot duty over the last few seasons. This is Matthew Tkachuk’s first foray into any sort of captaincy with the Flames (regular season). Both Tkachuk and Backlund will take over for Troy Brouwer who inexplicably wore the alternate captain patch with the Flames during his tenure in Calgary. Mark Giordano will retain the captain’s “C” for 2018-19, a position he has held since the Flames traded Jarome Iginla.
