The Calgary Flames welcome a very good Los Angeles Kings team to town. Unfortunately for the Flames, injuries have once again ransacked them as they will be without the services of Jaromir Jagr in addition to Michael Frolik and Kris Versteeg. Curtis Lazar will take Jagr’s place – that’s not ideal heading into a matchup of this magnitude.

People can bemoan Glen Gulutzan all they would like for not giving Curtis Lazar ice time over Troy Brouwer – the facts are that playing Brouwer over Lazar is absolutely the correct decision. Lazar is dead last on the team in relative shot attempts – worse than any forward or defenseman on a list that includes Matt Bartkowski. Having to play Brouwer is bad enough, but being forced to play both is a huge handicap on the coach. Marek Hrivik was recalled from Stockton today – that should relegate Lazar to the bench once he’s actually with the team.

Mike Smith will be the starter in tonight’s contest. Jonathan Quick will start across from him. Quick is having a resurgent year and could be the front runner for the Vezina – the Flames will need to do all they can to force possession and get pucks into scoring chances and it would be quite nice if the power play could find a way to continue to rebound.

Puck drop is at 7:05 P.M. M.S.T. Go Flames Go.
